Happy Monday

February 26, 2007

Hey There. Thanks so much for all your well wishes/prayers for my pregnancy. We are very excited! Nothing matches watching my husband’s excitement when I told him we were expecting. It was beautiful!

We like to keep things moving around here. You know, stay on our toes. Not promote idleness in our lives. So, right now the major things on our plate are finishing the last semester of college, first trimester of pregnancy, oh yeah and moving. That’s right at the end of this month we’re moving. WE’RE MOVING! Ahhhhh. This is very exciting. So, I’d like to solicite packing advice from all you innovative Proverbs 31 ladies out there. Any tips on moving? Any tips on moving with little guys running inbetween your legs while you’re packing? (Advice that would encourage me not to throw all the toys away would be helpful. They wouldn’t like that, although it’s very tempting ;-) Evil Smile)
Hope you all are having a happy Monday! Here’s to keeping things busy!

  1. My advice, start NOW.

Designate one room or area of your house for packed boxes. And put an empty box in each room of the house. Then each time you enter a room, look for something you won’t need for a month. If you won’t need it within the next month, put it in the box. This way you are “packing” all day long. This is how I did it. When you have “extra” time, i.e., the kids naptime, you can put more than one thing in the boxes.

Certainly don’t get rid of good, used, well-loved toys :) But I must say that packing to move is a GREAT time to go through toys and toss the broken ones, or the ones with missing parts, etc. Naptime is a good time to do this. Although, I will admit that I kept several toys that had missing parts because I knoew the kids really would miss them.

  2. Can I comment if I am only an aspiring Proverbs 31 woman??

It is hard for me to share just a few tips on moving since I sympathize with any pregnant woman whose moving…. I have been there….I have been there 10 times in 9 years of marriage and 6 months pregnant during 1 of those moves.

I will concur with Angela, it is best to box things by room. Another thought is to let the kids help box up a few things. One could be to let the kids find all their stuffed animals to put in a box and then let them “label” their box with crayons and such. You might could find some things also in their room that need to be protected and put that in with the stuffed animals since they are soft and can act like a cushion. I am sure there are other non-breakable items they could also “pack” even if you need to rearrange the items in the box a bit. I am sure Abe would be excited to know he helped you move.

Use towels and blankets to wrap up breakable items. I used kitchen towels for dishes. and such and bath towels for nic nacs, lamps etc.

For the last six or so moves we got to where we labeled boxes with a number and by the room. On a separate sheet we wrote next to the number all that was in the box when we packed it. It worked for us and I could tell Reid where anything was after our move….we kept multiple copies of the paper and had one in the computer too. If you are packing on a daily basis it is not a chore to keep a running list on the puter; it only takes a minute to type what is in the box. Toward the end when the computer was taken down, I wrote it by hand on the papter and on the boxes. I did this even when I had three little ones but I can be hyper-organized at times too and I always packed early.

Another thought, don’t forget you have toys from the church nursery to keep the kids occupied when you get to packing their toys.

Pack books in small boxes, obviously.

I never box clothes that are in drawers. I leave clothes in drawers and cover each drawer with a sheet or something, especially unmentionables. We would remove the drawers on moving day so that we could move dressers more easily which is what most people will do anyway b/c of weight and the potential for drawers sliding open. This is great b/c it saves you the hassle of holding back clothes for the moving period. Also take an hour out of one day to run all your hanging clothes over to the new house closets with the hubby–less wrinklage and less work.

Sorry for my book..ur…I mean…long comment. I am a little passionate about organization and moving.

And the best tip is PRAY!!
